Operations

The TC&W operates 229 miles of track from St. Paul, Minnesota to Milbank, South Dakota. Trains normally operate six days per week (Mon-Sat) on the entire line except the Montevideo to Milbank section (Milbank Turn) which normally operates four days a week. Trains can operate seven days a week when demand is at its peek.
With the exception of the unit and intermodal trains, each train is operated as Turn. Meaning it goes out to a certain location, turns around and heads back to where it originated from while performing work along the way. Every Turn hands cars off to the next train until all the cars have arrived at their destination. The big flaw with this type of operation is that when one train falls down, they all fall down.
The Camden Turn no longer runs. The transload facility at Camden on the Mississippi River has been shut down since 2004. Some of the traffic has been diverted onto the Savage Turn for the Minnesota River.
Note: Savage Turns are said to running very seldomly this year.
Click on the train name for more information on that train.
