Shoreham Empty
|
Short Summary
As of May 9th, 2007 a total of 9 intermodal trains have operated. Four loads and five empties. The loads come out of Montevideo where they are loaded with all types of grains for shipment to mostly Canada. I'm just guessing but I think the crew goes on duty at Montevideo at around 1900-2000 for the run to CP's Shoreham Yard in North Minneapolis. The empty goes on duty the following day to take empties back to Montevideo. Usually on duty betwen 1200 and 1800.
Shoreham to Montevideo
Coming out of Shoreham the train is technically a baretable train since all of the containers are empty. The load is scheduled to arrive at Shoreham at 0400 and the empty goes on duty between 1200 and 1800. The on duty time is decided by the managers at Shoreham depending on when the train will be ready. A lot of work isn't required for the train to leave. Just an airtest and permission to leave but a shove on the Loop Track is usually required to get into position to depart. If the call time is in the evening the train can be hindered by the hot CP 182.
When the train finally departs onto the BNSF at University, it crosses over to Main 3 (Midway sub.) and continues onto Van Buren where it crosses over to get onto the west leg of the wye for Harrison St. From here it continues on the same route the St. Paul Turn takes to Hopkins.
When arriving on the CP Bass Lake Spur (St. Louis Park & Hopkins) the train somtimes stops at the depot for paperwork. The stop shouldn't take more than 30 minutes and then it's a straight shot to Glencoe. This is the first intermodal traffic in Hopkins, and the entire TC&W system since the Milwaukee Road was in operation.
In Glencoe anther stop is usually made for paperwork and to possibly drop off another crew member. Many of the employees are not qualified to run to Shoreham so a pilot is required but not all the way to Montevideo. If MPL power (usually TCWR 2008, TCWR 302) is used, it is dropped off and different power is used for the remaining trip to Montevideo. For the remaining 82.5 miles to Montevideo the train should have a straight shot, unless the Ruebel Turn gets in the way.
Finally arriving at Montevideo the crew spots the train on east end of town where the Milwaukee Road once had a decently sized yard. If any empties came out of Shoreham (flat with no containers), some switching may be required. The one time I've seen the empty intermodal train there, they put the empties on the the head end.
The containers are now taking off the train and filled with grains and taken back to Shoreham on the loaded train.

Do not think of any of this information as absolute truth. After all, we are talking about a railroad here. Things change constantly. I tried to be as clear as possible while remaining detailed.
