History - Salsa Club of UCR

Our History

In 1998 the Ballroom Dance Club of UCR (BDC) was founded under the direction of Juliet McMaines, Desmund Wu, Lynette Robles, and Kristin E. Rooney.  In November of 1999 Kristin E. Rooney began to teach a social salsa night under BDC.  That same year the Swing Club of UCR merges with the BDC to create The Ballroom and Swing Club of UCR (BaSC).

In May of 2000 the first annual end of year Ballroom and Swing Club exposé occurred.  By the fall, of the same year, Lou Luistro stepped up from the members realm and began to teach the salsa night workshops along with Kristin E. Rooney

The initial schedule of workshops for BaSC was Ballroom Tuesdays, Salsa Wednesdays, and Swing Thursdays.  Here is where the tradition of Salsa Wednesdays was born...

During the winter of 2001 the very first Salsa Performance team of BaSC was initiated under the name of “Salsa Sluts”.  Membership of this performance team was made up of (but not restricted to) Danielle McKinley, Pablo Gonzalez, Nalei Guzman, David Quintero, Rhonda Miranan, and Allen Aguilar.

Under the leadership of Allen Aguilar, Rhonda Miranan, David Quintero, and Pablo Gonzalez (and in part due to the controversy on the name “Salsa Sluts”) the Salsa Club of UCR was born during the summer of 2001.

Under the camaraderie and support of O.E.U.E, the Salsa Club of UCR was able to obtain a location for the Wednesday night workshops during the summer and fall of 2001. Eventually the Salsa Club of UCR became its own self-standing registered ASUCR club.
