Tips

FAQ

While I was researching the web for binding tools I saw many that were designed for self publishers. Some bound books over the edge of a table with bars and clamps, very simple, but not what I was looking for. I can't remember  how many kinds I looked at but most of the products they had to offer were quite expensive. I experimented for a year or so with a lot of different ways to bind books and I threw a lot of fixtures away before I settled on this design that I have put together.

Here's the tips

#1: Just so I don't forget to brush tthe pages I always keep the wire brush on top of the glue containers, that way when I start to put glue on the spine I am reminded to brush the edges.

#2: When cutting the printed sheets in half make sure that the cutter knife is sharp for if not, the pages will have a curl and hide some pages from the glue. You will see this when you do the brushing.

#3: Don't forget to pull out the paper glue guard before it gets stuck in place. You might have to reduce some of the tension of the clamps in order to do this. Need I mention, be careful that the pages don't slip out of place. O' I hope you didn't use colored paper as the book sheets might become discolored.

#4: After the glue or cement has set the book can be taken out of the fixture and squared up, then placed on a hard surface with either clamps or a heavy weight to compress the book until dry, over night if possible.

#5: If you find you have a bad bond between the cover and the pages of the book, try applying a coat of glue on the spine, then do not close the cover against the pages but let it dry over night. With another layer of glue applied the next day or at least after several hours this builds up the spine making a stronger book. In the process make sure that you press down on the cover with extra firmness.

Adhesives

To gain some insight about adhesives for bookbinding I went to the web and posted a message about what would be the best kind. I got a lot of feedback, from padding glue; hide glue, contact cement, and many more. You might want to check out the Internet your self, if so type in ‘book binding glue’ on some search engine. I decided on ‘Daps Weld wood contact cement (yellow) and I have done a good many books with very good luck. But, now I am experimenting with another ‘Daps’ product only this one is a neoprene, rubber formula (white) and it is water soluble: very good results too!

(O'  with this water soluble glue you don't use the paper glue guard for it makes the paper mushy and does not come out clean)

Where can I get more adhesive:

The cement or glue can be acquired at most hardware stores, either in paste form or liquid. If you have trouble finding any send me an E/Mail telling me what you need and I'll send it to you at a minim cost.

Can I order parts and or accessories from Last Chance?

Yes, I will furnish fixture parts as needed for those that have bought the fixture from me.

See parts list

Why use a glue guard:

This is some thing you will have to decide for yourself, I found it very helpful as it protected the signatures from getting drops of glue on them when I applied the glue.

Should I use the glue guard all the time:

No! only when a solvent glue is used, when a water based adhesive is used you might have trouble with the glue guards, as the paper becomes pulpy and the glue guards don’t pull out clean. (This is caused by the action of the water based glue).

Can I buy the book on Self Publishing with out buying a fixture?

Yes! just order the one item on the order form. or buy the fixture and I'll give you the book.

How many pages does the book "Self Publishing" have?

75 pages with many illustrations, Hey, that's an easy one.

How many pages does "The Sheans, Stowell and Harrisville" have?

222 page with about a 122 pictures.

Do I need the cover scoring board?

No! but you might find it very handy, for it will make your cover spines more controllable.

Will I be able to do a 7 x 9 book on this fixture?

Yes: with a little bit of adjustment in setting up the pages it should be very easy to do this.

Glass cutters, can I use new ones?

I don't advise it for the score might be cut to deep and then the cover would break at this point. If all you have is a new one, run it on a piece of emery paper a few times., course you can go to a glass shop and ask them for some of their old ones as they only throw them away.

Where can I buy the spring clamps?

Most any hardware stores, or again if you have trouble finding any send me an E/Mail telling me the size and type you want and I'll send some to you for a nominal price plus mailing.

Where can I get the "Click book program"?

It can be downloaded by using this:   http://www.bluesquirrel.com

Can I pay by "Pay Pal".

Yes, just go to the  Order form..

fill it out then click 'add to cart and Pay-Pal'  there.
