The current church in Newcastle upon Tyne, was established in 1985 and is actually the second one to be established, as another one can be traced from 1836 to 1943 (see The First Congregation) At present we meet at the Kingston Park community centre for services.(10:30 Bible Study / Sunday School, 11:45 Breaking of Bread) We believe that our order of worship reflects the practices of Christians in the days of the New Testament. Every Sunday we sing and pray and participate in the Lord's Supper, proclaim the word of God and give according to our ability.
The New Testament contains the complete pattern for the Lord's church: the terms by which it is identified, the message it is to proclaim, the way which it is to worship, the plan for its organization and the method by which we become a member of His Church. In short, in the New Testament we are given a pattern to follow. We strive to be Christians only by adhering to the biblical pattern. We plead for the unity of all believers. Not a unity simply for the sake of unity, but a unity based upon scripture alone. We believe these scriptures to be the inspired word of the living God. When this word is followed it produces simply Christians - nothing more, nothing less.
People today look at all the different churches and religions and accept them as normal. This is not what Jesus intended, he did not intend for his church to be divided nor divisive. The Bible speaks of only one church, which Jesus called "His Church." The division that exists today is clearly not what Jesus intended, nor what he pleaded would take place. He prayed that His followers would have unity. All His people are members of the one church, of which Jesus Himself is the only Head. We have no denominational name. We are simply a group of Christians doing their best to follow His will.
The churches of Christ have no earthly headquarters. their only head is Jesus Christ, who is in Heaven, at the right hand of God the Father. The Holy Spirit dwells in the heart of each Christian and unites that person to God. Each congregation follows the leadership given by their head (Jesus Christ) by following the Holy Scriptures.
Often people have mistaken us for other religious bodies, some of them having similar-sounding names such as:
Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons)
Church of Christ-Scientists (Christian Scientists)
International Church of Christ (Multiplying Ministry Movement)*
Jehovah Witnesses
We have no connection in any way with these groups. We use the term church of Christ not as a title, but to describe to whom we belong. We are Christ's Church and have people from many parts of the world worshipping together in a truly international fellowship, demonstrating that all people can be one in Christ (Galatians 3 verse 28). There have been churches of Christ in this country since before the 1600s A.D., and there are congregations: located in all the larger metropolitan areas.
* Although historically the ICC may have had connections to some congregations elsewhere, they have long since been ended and no such connections exist today
We Welcome All Who Seek the Truth
We do not claim to be the only Christians, but Christians only. We believe that our call for a return to the Christianity of Jesus Christ is a valid one. If you are interested in our aims, come along to one of our meetings. Everyone will always receive a warm and friendly welcome at any of our meetings. If you would like to know more about us we would be happy to talk with you.
