Writing: Present

Everyonce in a while I take a break from the image side of creativity and put my thoughts to words, usually in small works such as poems or short stories. The bulk of my written thoughts have been showcased as frivolous daily messages that I featured as my away messages and on a xanga site but have now moved to Facebook notes. Those works, however, are much more comical and light hearted while the writing presented here is a great deal more serious and down to earth. The away messages and facebook notes represent the crazier side of me whereas these are for when I am trying to convey messages and meaning. The fact that I do any serious things at all may, indeed, be quite shocking to those who have read the other pages here.

I usually do not post my stories or poems right away and thus some of these are not linked to, only mentioned to create a full catalogue. The ones posted are stories and quotes I have enjoyed and are not overtly personal. This list will likely grow over time. I hope you enjoy.

A common theme througout my thoughts and writing has always been about taking chances and doing things for the hell of it. I can't say that I always follow the advice but when the most important things are on the line I try my damndest to follow through. Sometimes the hardest thing is convicing everyone else to do the same thing, or just one person. "The Debate" is a serio-comedy (serious comedy) about a man who has a choice to make about which apples to buy. While the comedy of the story is based on the ludicracy of its premise and overall plot and style, the seriousness is derived from the aspects of decision making that the story explores through the man's thoughts. While sometimes inane and off topic, the story mirrors some of the tough situations we all face in life from a lighter perspective.

For some odd reason I get the urge to write a short story and this was the one that popped out of me a lonely winter break at home. The story is about a young man who meets a girl on a vacation. They have a great time together but are obviously unable to continue with any meaningful relationship. While the plot synopsis is very simplistic and boring, the fun part in this story is the comical style of writing that gives a funny edge to what should be a very somber story. While mostly an exploration of the limits of love, it is also a development using heavy voice in a narrative.

Have you ever stood at a red light at 1AM and wondered to yourself why you are stopping, thinking why on earth should this dumb red light have the power to make you stop? If not then I suggest you move on but if so, this is the exact theme this short story explores. Its purpose is to really make you stop and evaluate the things you are doing on the most basic level and give an almost "Matrix-esque" perspective on the way things work. The writing style is again using heavy voice but on a much softer and less comical level.

"An Interesting Person "

Someone asked me one time, "What are the 8 most important things in the world?" I thought about it for a while, gave a vague answer, and moved on. The thought, however, stuck in my mind like the Spanish Inquisition. My full response to this question was in the form of this story. It is appropriately about a man who goes around the world trying to answer that very question, coming to a simple conclusion.

There are many ways to approach the differences between people. This short poem expresses what I think is the right way and the wrong way to deal those prickly social issues.

This story follows along the lines of "The Sun Sets in Iowa." If you liked that one, you'd probably like this Valentine's Day short story. A boy, stuck in an elevator, finds what would seemingly be an awful situation diffused by a girl who turns out to be the best person he could possibly get stuck with. Heavy narrative voice returns in the form of another romantic-comedy type short story.

The Point of Life

Date: 2005
Category: Mantra
Target: Personal

The point of life is to live, but don't forget to smile once in a while too.

A simple life statement that explains itself pretty well. There have been many discussions over the meaning of life when we often overlook the obviously simple, yet important answer.

Dare

Date: 2006
Category: Mantra
Target: Personal

Why are we here, if not to live?

Why do we dream, if not to try?

Distance is but only a tool of excuse, to give reason to that which we should dare to accomplish.

Another straightfoward statement that asserts to ignore the obstalces in between you and your dreams. They are only excuses to stop you from doing things you only have one chance to do. Live your life.
