Video: Present

I wouldn't dare call myself a film artist, a cinematographer, or even an amateur video maker. Although I do plan on dabbling in some more serious videos in the future, these videos were apart of a digital design class that focused on art as well as video media. I felt that even the most crazed works that I have put together deserved some spot on a portfolio website. These were made for pure fun and unfortunately have been highly compressed into .mov format. You'll need Apple's Quicktime player to view these files or an appropriate .mov codec.

The other files are various flash files that I was making for the original concept of this site as well as my portfolio site for the digital design class. They are a bit more serious and actually were decent attempts and making some competent Flash movies. You'll need Macromedia Flash Player to view those files.

"The Japanese Prime Minister"

This assignment called for us to slowly edit pictures of ourselves into something or someone else, essentially creating a movie of us "transforming." I decided to transform myself into the (then current) Japanese prime minister who I think is pretty much exactly like me...except the eyes...hair..and skin tone.

Enjoy.

This digital design assignment made us create a video that evoked some sort of emotion using no dialogue and little voice recording. I'll leave the emotion we chose as a mystery for you to figure out, but I don't think it will be exactly that hard to catch. I didn't know it at the time but thanks to my film class I now know that I used a "match on action" cut in my grand film that had...one cut. My director skills are clearly fine tuned even when I had no idea what I was doing.

These two flash elements were originally the navigation for the site you are viewing now. I wanted to incorporate some flash into the design of my site and these were the two lead-ins to the logo you see at the top and the now defunct flash navigation system. I opted out of these because scaling the design for the website to various browser sizes undoubtedly killed the display properties of them and didn't look well going cross-resolution. Plus, as I wanted to expand the site, I would've had to go back into the flash navigation and re-animate everything for a brand new link. In the end I decided a simpler HTML/CSS website would do better and while less flashy (hah pun!) would be more functional and still retain its good design qualities.

It is possible that I could use the introduction to the JLG Design LTD logo on this site but I think it loses something when it doesn't have the flash navigation underneath it (the links). Not to mention it would be extremely obnoxious to view the same animation everytime a user switched pages. I might use it on the home page but for now it will be a remnant of another attempt at flash. It's not a bad movie and in fact, I was quite happy with the progress I made on using flash commands and coding.

This was a flash introduction that had two purposes. First, it was to be the introduction flash movie for my digital design portfolio site and second, it was a flash movie to explain the significance behind the flag that I tout with me everywhere I go (along with my Dayton lanyard). It's a 2 minute movie that goes through each of the elements of the flag and introduces JLG Ltd. to the music of "Brand New Colony" by the Postal Service.

For being my second flash intro...ever...it's not a bad use of vectors and shapes but there are definitely some rough spots and dead time that I would prefer to go back and fix. Nonetheless it's a very fun movie that explains an important image for me. It's a great way to explain the answer when people ask me "Hey what's that flag or what's it mean." Everyone loves visual aids in explanations. Everyone.
