The Midlands
The designs during the midlands were a further exploration of certain blending and imaging techniques that have helped me with my later designs. The images here are mostly characterized by a large use of 3rd party images blended in a new fashion with an additional layer of my own text or design. While composition and color use improved drastically during this time period, these designs were still highly depenedent on the work of others to make them work, especially backgrounds.
However, major inroads were made in independent designs coming from drawings in class to an actual digital medium. Some of the designs here are truely original with no outside work in them, but still lack a general polish and finish.
The most prominent entry featured in this section is "The Flag." It is perhaps the longest standing icon I have used in all of my online work and as such it was a very important stepping stone in my design work. It was probably the first well composed, simple, fully original jpeg to come out of this time.

Ah, my glorious fixation with Ohio and all things Red-White-and Blue. Meant to be a salute to my glorious homestate and country, this flag blend had a good concept with some bad finishing. The blending is waaaaaay to washed out and the typograhy on top definitely does not match the rest of the image.

Now this is one of those times where your grandparent's advice is useful: keep it simple. A black and white desert thrown in there with some scanlines and raised text really makes this signature pretty simple and timeless. It's no barn burner and I'm not sure where my connection to the desert is, but it is aesthetically pleasing and design wise is pretty lasting.

OMFG, IT MOVES! Well, that's may not what you will think but it was when I completed this. I wanted for my name to blur in for a motion/speed effect. Unfortunately, I was limited by the GIF's limitation on frames per second. The animation could have been better on something like flash but hey, for an initial foray into moving pictures, it's not bad.

More Red, white, and blue and patriotism! The composition of this guy is not bad but the background is lacking. Perhaps a simple solid-color backdrop might have made this guy a bit more well rounded.

Ah the beginning of an era. The Jonair arrow still lives to this day, although it's been rehauled since this initial design. This logo was for my adventures in Microsoft's popular Flight Simulator game series. I, of course, had to customize the airliners and have one with my own name on it. The airline was aptly named Jonair and logos paint schemes were created in tow. While the composition of this version was fine, the jaggies and the gradient were no-nos.

Do you get that I'm from Ohio yet? Again with the raised text, color overlay, and cloud background. It wasn't a winning combination before, and it still isn't in this design. Moving on...

If I recall correctly, this was a strange attempt to enter a design contest for a web-hosting company. I can't take credit for the background but the rest is mine. Any good things about this piece, though, are from the stolen background so I'll just leave it there.

I just loves me some scanlines! A pretty simple logo for a website that was going to be dedicated to our weekly Fall football games at the park. As these kind of web projects tend to go, it was abandoned before the logo could be placed anywhere useful.

This was from a project in high-school class. We were tasked with creating a logo for our fictional company. I can't remember anything in detail about the project but I decided to have my company make light switches. This is probably the first instance of using simple solid colors in my composition. It's pretty weird but I actually still like this design. The purple though...oh the purple.

I tell ya, the webpage that this logo goes with actually looks pretty simple and sharp. By itself, though, this logo stands on maybe half a leg. The swoosh and oval is nice, but the text is too gradientized and doesn't really strike the type of fear you would think "Royal Assassins" should instill.

Now this is a logo I like. I was tasked with creating this nasty looking logo from some sort of gaming clan. While all I did was take a standard C and I and fuck with it using photoshop's filters, I really like the effect the letters create. The edges are clean and the composition is pretty balanced. I'd run from any clan who sported this nasty looking alphabet based nightmare.

This image is prety ubiquitous when it comes to anything me. I have always loved flags so creating this was rather inevitable. Fortunately, it is one of my most coveted designs. Sitting in the dulldrums of study hall, I drew up this sketch and absolutely loved the meaning and balance that came out. The flag is an Island (the diamond) in the middle of the sea, representing self-reliance. The lines to the edges represent friendships, the sunrise represents hope, and the waves, change.

This is so simple, yet it works. This guy was an avatar for one of the forums I frequented, the BK standing for, of course, BlackKnight. Not much to say here other than it's not a had use if abstracts and letters.

This is mostly the same as above, just with some new colors and a different text line. It was a small banner for the United Gaming League. It lasted about as long as the league did, which was about 7 months.
