& Harry Potter Important Characters
Harry James Potter
Harry is famous in the wizarding world for his encounter with the evil Lord Voldemort, one of the most powerful wizards of all time and the primary antagonist villain in the series, when he was just a year old. Voldemort mysteriously lost his powers in the encounter and was severely crippled, although he survived.
Adrian Rawlins as James Potter, Geraldine Somerville as Lily Potter, and one of the Saunders triplets as the young Harry Potter in Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.James and Lily Potter were killed in this incident in 1981 while protecting baby Harry from Voldemort's attack. James died first, and Lily's dying act - choosing to sacrifice herself to save her infant son - placed Harry under an ancient magic that protected him. Subsequently, Avada Kedavra, the killing curse that was used against Harry by Voldemort, backfired and Harry survived. This resulted in the loss of Voldemort's powers, as well as his exile and eventual decline from a position of power and fear in the wizarding world. This event led to Harry being heralded as a celebrity - "the boy who lived"; due to him being the only person to ever survive the Avada Kedavra curse - a lightning bolt-shaped scar on his forehead being the sole remnant of the incident.
Despite the fact that Harry survived Voldemort's attempted murder, he still has no idea as to why Voldemort lost his powers - in Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, Harry confirms this fact when Voldemort questions him:
I don't know why you lost your powers that night, but I know why you couldn't kill me ...
After the death of his parents, Harry is forced to live with the only family he had left - his mother's sister, Petunia Dursley, and her husband, Vernon, in the small town of Little Whinging in Surrey, England. The Dursleys live at number four, Privet Drive in a large, impeccably maintained four-bedroom house and seem to be moderately well off; however, they neglected Harry in favour of their own son Dudley and in an attempt to remove all traces of his magical self to make him "normal," kept him fully isolated from the wizarding world.
It is in many ways important that Harry is a half-blood - that is, the offspring of a Muggle-born parent. Through his father Harry is a descendant of the pure-blood Potter line, but his mother, Lily Evans (later Lily Potter) is a Muggle-born witch: a witch born into a Muggle family. Harry is therefore a half-blood, and this is significant to the plot in different ways.
Hermione Jane Granger
Hermione Jane Granger (born 19 September 1979)1 2 is a fictional character in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter book series. The character is portrayed by Emma Watson in the films.
Hermione is a Gryffindor student at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and is a close friend of Harry Potter and Ron and Ginny Weasley. She plays a key role in many of Harry's adventures and serves as a moderating influence on Harry and Ron.
Hermione acts, at times, like the mother hen of the trio. She is very studious, and can be a bit bossy and fussy. She's the best student in her year and one of the best in the school, and is often teased and admired in equal measure for her "know-it-all" tendencies. Harry, Ron and especially Neville depend on her for academic help; and her knowledge, research skills, and common sense often prove invaluable in overcoming the trio's more serious challenges.
Hermione always goes the extra mile when completing homework assignments, handing in four feet of parchment when she was only asked for two, carrying out independent research and regularly reading ahead of the class. Upon her very first meeting with Harry and Ron, she announces to them that she's, "learnt all our set books off by heart, of course, I just hope it will be enough."
This excessive studying and determination to be the best at everything often reflects Hermione's deep seated insecurity, a fear of failure that can give way to irrational panic and anxiety. Given that she receives top grades in all of her OWL exams in her fifth year (except for Defence Against the Dark Arts, where she received the second-highest grade) this panic would appear to be misplaced.
Hermione is Muggle-born, that is, the child of two non-magical parents. Mr and Mrs Granger have, to date, received very little "page time." They are both dentists and, according to Rowling, "they are a bit bemused by their odd daughter but quite proud of her all the same." Rowling noted she initially considered giving Hermione a younger sister, but now says it's "too late." Therefore, it's usually considered canon that Hermione is an only child.
Hermione has brown eyes and, when she first appears, "lots of bushy brown hair and rather large front teeth." Many at the school have teased her for her looks, including, on one occasion, Professor Snape. During the fourth book, Hermione gets her teeth shrunk to a "normal size" by magic, though her dentist parents wanted her to continue with her braces. When she applies Sleekeazy's Hair Potion and does her hair up in a chignon for the Yule Ball, even Harry and Ron notice she's pretty.
Hermione's name is pronounced "her-my-oh-nee" (IPA: /hə.maɪ.ə.niː/), as readers find out in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire. This was the most frequently asked question J. K. Rowling received, so in this book she cunningly had Hermione teach Viktor Krum how to pronounce her name properly (without much success). Rowling said she obtained it from William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale, claiming that she wanted it to be unusual, since if fewer girls shared her name, fewer girls would get teased for it. "Hermione", appropriately, is derived from "Hermes", the Greek god of invention, inspiration, eloquence and quick thinking
Ronald Bilius Weasley
Ronald "Ron" Bilius Weasley (born 1 March 1980)1 is a fictional character in J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series of books. He is portrayed by Rupert Grint in the films.
Ron's best friends at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry are Harry Potter and Hermione Granger.
Ron was born to Arthur Weasley and Molly Prewett Weasley, members of an old and well-known pure-blood Wizarding family. Ron is the sixth of seven children, and is the youngest son. Ron grew up in The Burrow, near the village of Ottery St. Catchpole in Devon. Ron has five older brothers, Bill, Charlie, Percy, twins Fred and George, and a little sister, Ginny.
Most of his fellow Gryffindors and other friendly classmates call him "Ron," with the exception of Luna Lovegood, who calls him by his full name, and Lavender Brown, who briefly used the endearment "Won-Won" while they were dating. His brothers, Fred and George jokingly refer to him as "ickle Ronniekins" in the first book. Draco Malfoy and other less-than-friendly students from rival Hogwarts Houses generally call him "Weasley." Dobby the house-elf referred to him once as "Wheezy."
At the beginning of the series, Mr. Weasley is head of the Misuse of Muggle Artifacts Office, a minor division in the Ministry of Magic's Department of Magical Law Enforcement. This is an impressive sounding position, but one which barely earns Mr. Weasley enough to support his large family. Throughout the series, Ron is very self-conscious and frustrated with his family's poorness. Despite their lack of money, Ron has such caring parents and a closeknit family that he is lucky in ways he may not realize.
Ron has the trademark flaming red hair of the Weasleys and blue eyes. He is described as being tall, thin and gangly, with freckles, a long nose and big hands and feet.
Ron's older brothers have each excelled in various ways; Ron sometimes feels lost in the shadow of their accomplishments and has a great desire to be noticed in his own right. When given the opportunity, Ron basks in the glow of the spotlight. It can be seen that Ron's craving for recognition can cause him to have arguments with Harry and Hermione, when he feels that he is sidestepped by others in front of his best friends. Ultimately, Ron's loyalty and dedication towards his two best friends is unquestionable.
As he grows older, Ron begins to reveal his own abilities as he is made a prefect, and also gets chosen as the Quidditch Keeper for Gryffindor. This seems to give him credit as the secondary hero in such stories like Sam Gamgee in The Lord of the Rings and Han Solo in Star Wars. Ron is an excellent chess player and usually beats his best friends at Wizard's Chess. He can be an outstanding Keeper, but his skills are sometimes adversely affected due to nervousness and lack of confidence at performing in front of a large crowd.
Ron has a sardonic, wisecracking sense of humour and his comments, though usually hilarious, can occasionally offend or insult others. Ron can be very clueless at times about what is going on, especially with girls. At times Ron, affable though he is, can appear to be the most emotional and impulsive of the trio, often going with what his feelings dictate any given moment as opposed to thinking things through. That, in addition to his sometimes apparant insensitivity to the feelings of others, has unfortunately cast him as something of an oaf in the eyes of some. However, Ron is generally very good-natured and dependable.
Even though he may act as though he dislikes some of his possessions, he can actually be quite fond of them (for instance, his former pet rat Scabbers and his owl Pigwidgeon). Ron also seems to have a growing romantic interest in Hermione, which was hinted at from the third book, and was very prevalent in the sixth book
Ginevra Molly Weasley
Ginevra "Ginny" Molly Weasley (born 11 August 1981) is a fictional character in the Harry Potter book series. She is the youngest of Arthur Weasley and Molly Weasley's seven children, as well as being their only daughter. She is small, with vivid red hair (trademark of her clan) and bright brown eyes, and is occasionally likened to a cat. She is a talented witch, especially noted for her skill with the Bat-Bogey Hex.
Ginny is a descendant of the Weasley family, one of the oldest pure-blood wizarding families in existence, and is also a descendent of the Prewett and Black lines through marriage (her mother was a Prewett before marriage). She is sister to Bill, Charlie, Percy, Fred and George and Ron. She is also good friends with Harry Potter, Hermione Granger and Luna Lovegood and is soon to become sister-in-law to Fleur Delacour.
According to author J.K. Rowling, Ginny is also the first female born into the Weasley line in "several generations."
Ginevra is the Italian form of the name 'Guinevere', which is the Welsh form of an even older name: Gwenhwyfar. Gwen meaning 'fair' or 'white' and hwyfar meaning 'smooth'. Guinevere was also the Queen consort of the legendary King Arthur; there seems to be somewhat of a running theme of Arthurian legend with the family's names.
Fred and George Weasley
Fred and George Weasley (both born April 1, 1978)[1][2] are fictional characters in the Harry Potter series of novels, created by J. K. Rowling. They are the twin sons of Arthur and Molly Weasley. They are younger brothers of Bill, Charlie and Percy. They are older brothers of Ron and Ginny, who are both members of Harry Potter's close group of friends. The twins are also good friends with Harry, and generally treat Harry better than they treat Ron, whom they love to torment along with Percy. As the rest of the Weasleys, they have flaming red hair.
Fred and George were the school clowns, more interested in making new jokes than studying, although they show a high degree of knowledge and skill in creating magical jokes and tricks. It is, therefore, not surprising that their birthday is April 1st, April Fool's Day. They are supremely popular characters among fans and many of their jokes and pranks are legendary both in the stories and in the real world. Fred at times appears to be the more dominant twin, but they generally work as a team. They were the beaters on the Gryffindor Quidditch team before they were banned by Dolores Umbridge and consequently quit Hogwarts. They now own a joke shop on Diagon Alley. Much to their mother's disappointment, they are her only sons who weren't made prefects (though it is important to note that neither was their younger sister, Ginny). Their appearance and personality are so indistinguishable that they can fool even their mother, who once sent them jumpers monogrammed "G" and "F." The twins swapped jumpers and called themselves "Gred" and "Forge."
The naming of the twins as Fred and George has an interesting parallel. In the film Gone with the Wind, there are two red-headed twins named Stuart and Brent Tarleton, who are played by George Reeves and Fred Crane. When this was brought to J.K. Rowling's attention, she remarked that she hadn't noticed until it was brought up, so it is most likely a coincidence.
